Bonus Mom Badge

I have decided that there needs to be some recognition for the Bonus Mom's of the world so I have created the Bonus Mom Badge. This Badge of Honor represents your hard work, sacrifice, patience and love that you have shown to your Bonus Son's and Daughters. We have to work extra hard to earn the love and respect that comes with a title such as "bonus mom" but as you know, the rewards are priceless! Thank you for your sacrifice and commitment to loving, encouraging and supporting the children in your life. You will reap a lifetime of blessings!
A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life...She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all." Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. Proverbs 31:10-12 & 25-31
I am picking two honorees who I feel are GREAT BONUS MOM's. Please feel free to pass the badge along to others and tell them how much you appreciate their commitment to the children in their lives.

Happy Birthday Autumn!

It's official. Autumn is twelve years old!! She is very excited to be one year closer to that coveted title of Teenager. Scott is slowly adjusting to the idea that he is OLD enough to even HAVE a teenager but she is becoming a young woman right before our eyes.

Friday was the big day so we celebrated with her last weekend at grandma's house. Scott was having a rough day so he ended up staying home while we made the trek to O-town. We were all disappointed that he couldn't be at the party but we are learning to be flexible when it comes to his bad days. Sissy was very understanding and smothered her daddy with love before we left. Grandma Mary and Uncle Billy helped us celebrate and the kids had a great time running thru Grandma's house. They miss their room so they had fun going thru the house reminiscing and seeing what has changed in the past 4 months.

Eli helped me light the candles on the HEART shaped cake.
(Remember our LOVEly themed weekend....we continued that love on Sunday with a Heart cake...)

Eli presented the cake to sissy while we sang...

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Sissyyyyyy, Happy Birthday to you!

I think this was Sissy's favorite present. When she was 8 she told me that you are NEVER TOO OLD for Hello Kitty!

This was Autumn's OLDEST present, EVER.
Grandma gave her a coat that my dad bought in Mexico in the late 60's/early 70's.
The coat is about 40 years old and Grandma wore it all the time when she was in her early 20's.
It fit Sissy perfectly and she LOVED it!

She is so grown up....

Here is the Birthday Gang. So glad Uncle Billy was there to PLAY with the kids.

This is ALWAYS what happens when Uncle Billy is around. He gets beat up!
The boys wrestled with him and generally kicked his booty.
I think Uncle Billy is getting too old to fight anymore!
He is in his 30th year of life you know....

We had a great time at Grandma's house and really enjoyed spending time with her. It's really weird not seeing her everyday so we are going to try and visit once a month. We miss her!

We had such a great time this past weekend with all the LOVE and celebrating. Autumn is such a sweet, sweet girl and it has been a joy for me to watch her grow and mature these last few years. We are so very proud of her BIG heart and her concern for others.

We LOVE you Autumn! Happy Birthday Sweetheart!

Happy Valentine's Day! We HEART you!

Do you ever have one of those moments when your heart is flooded with peace and joy and you feel like everything is right in your world? I had that "moment" several times this past weekend. We had a super long weekend that we packed full of fun and L...O....V....E.... and I think that this past Saturday was my All Time Favorite Valentine's Day EVER!

On Friday I surprised the kids with a little treat and took them to see our LOVEable Emma play JV BB. Our sweet friends A&B surprised us with tickets and we got to see Emma W..I..N..! She did a great job playing and the kids were so excited to see their "sis". After the game we got to spend a little time with her and our other extended "family". The kids did not want to go but we had to get to the clinic to pick up Scott. It was so nice to see some of our camp family in the middle of winter!

My baby Emma is #33 Blue & White. I am her Mommy Dawnua.

Lucas took my camera...can you say CLOSE UP?

Yo, What's Up?

This is their other "sis" Libby. She is Lucas' 4th of July buddy. They use to be the same size!

Eli loves his sissy Libby....poor girl gave about 30 piggy back rides...

Here is the whole extended family. We sure love those girls!!!

We had a very busy day on Saturday that started with a trip to Lowe's Build & Grow clinic. We have been planning this for about 6 weeks and the kids were excited to finally make their Valentine gifts. They each got to make a Jewelry box and we divided them up for all the moms and one for Grandma Mary (Grammy). After we built the boxes and installed the mirror on the lid, we spent another 1.5 hours painting and perfecting each gift. They did such a great job on their presents and from what I have heard so far....3 out of 4 have been a big hit!

Autumn made one for her mommy.

Noah made one for Grandma Mary.

She LOVED her Valentine's Day Gift! It's red inside and out and has the kids' photo on the top.

Eli made his for me. You can call me Mommy, Dawma or Momm-ya :)

Lucas made his for his mommy and then the boys all signed the bottom.

After Lowe's, Noah, Autumn and I went to the Y and did our work out thang while Scott played Chess with Eli & Lucas at home. The kids are pro's on all the machines now and I LOVE working out with them. While we were in the weight room one guy asked me what I had to do to get them to the gym....I told him that he had it all wrong...they BEG me to go to the gym all the time. They love it and I am so glad they are creating good habits now....plus they motivate me.

On Saturday night the kids surprised us with a little Valentine's Day party by decorating and setting the dining room table. They made heart decorations for the back of the chairs, heart decorations for each plate and special Valentine cards for everyone. They made 24 cards!! They wrote the sweetest things and were so proud of their party ideas. We had yummy Heart shaped pizza, pink applesauce and pink lemonade. We ended the party by cuddling on the couch and watching a movie. Other than treatment, it was a perfect Valentine's Day! We had heart shaped reeses peanut butter cups, heart shaped pizza, xo shaped sandwiches and heart shaped oatmeal thruout our day. It was a LOVEly day surrounded by those I LOVE most!

This is the beautiful table that the kids set up for us.
They made candy heart favors and decorated the back of the chairs.
They are AMAZING children!

Aren't the heart pizzas cool? They were yummy too!

This is how you make PINK applesauce...you make it with LOVE...

Happy Valentine's Day from the Dawson Family!

Not Twiggy For Long

Have I mentioned that we are a super, silly laugh-a-thon waiting to happen? It seems we are always making each other laugh...and sometimes it's on purpose. We each have silly nicknames and the boys have their own silly songs. Eli's song is a little mushy....Lucas' is silly and Noah's is the song that changes at every bedtime. We add to it and change the verses but it always makes him smile....well, I think it's the song that makes him smile but maybe it's the sight of me dancing to the Funky music we play at bedtime....Hmmmm

Speaking of Noah (AKA Twiggy)....he has started working out with me at the YMCA. He went thru the Tween orientation 2 weeks ago and has been certified to work out on ALL the equipment. Last Saturday was our first workout session together. We worked out in the weight room for 15 minutes and then I went to my aerobics/dance class while Noah worked out on the cardio machines. It's all in the same room so I could see him the whole time I was working out. Every time I would look over at him he would give me a HUGE grin. He worked out on the elliptical machine, treadmill, bicycle, rowing machine and stair master....for 40 minutes!!! I was so proud of him! After we cooled down we finished up with 15 more minutes of weights...and we were ready to go home. He can be very independent and it was so nice to see him excel at this the first time he tried it. He felt great afterwards and only wanted to eat healthy food. The weekend before he announced that Saturday's should be...Lettuce saturdays...where we only eat healthy food during the weekend after our workouts...so, Lett-Uce Eat Healthy has begun...and at this rate he will be starting some great habits for life and won't be Twiggy for long...

Here he is after his hard workout...eating a healthy snack and stuffing his cheeks.

Boys: Should We Be Worried?

It's hard to decide who is the silliest in our family. It is always a close race and the kids keep out doing each other to be in the lead...last time it was Lucas and his booger comment. This time the trophy goes to Eli. On the way to school last Monday Eli asked me... "Can throw up come out your ears if you close your mouth and hold your nose?" Now with Eli, he doesn't just say something funny....he follows it up with a visual explanation....a charade if you will.....so that is what I got while driving to school...and multi-faceted visual demonstration of what it would look and sound like IF it was possible to puke out your ears....

A few years ago one of the boys (name withheld to protect the innocent) asked me a serious question.....he looked at me with a straight face and asked, "Do girls poop?" I had to stifle my laugh because he was dead serious....and that was the beginning of many girl questions....

Lately, we have had lots of conversations about girls, friends and girlfriends. Girls seem to throw themselves at these beautiful boys and that attention comes in a variety of ways. We have experienced pushing, pulling, bullying, chasing, true friendships, best friend connections, forced courtships and ex-girlfriends. Should I remind you that they are 10, 8 and 6?! Last week Lucas told us that he had a new girlfriend at school and that made **** his ex-girlfriend. Then he stopped and said..."What's an ex-girlfriend anyway?" That of course led to more discussions about girls, girlfriends and ex-girlfriends....Daddy and I want them to wait until they are 30 before they date but I don't know how long we can keep that going....Should we be worried?

Lyme Disease : Clothing to educate the world.

I have started a CafePress store called Lymies Unite in the hopes of raising more money to pay for Scott's Lyme treatment. Since art is my therapy and I LOVE to design I figured this would be a good way for me to vent my Lyme frustrations and hopefully make a little money. I hope that some of these will speak to you and that you will buy, buy, buy! :) Check back often as I have more designs and products on the way. All of the proceeds go toward the cost of Scott's medical treatment. This may include prescriptions, supplements, blood tests, health insurance, office visits and the gasoline it takes to get us to the clinic. Thank you for your prayers & support!

Boys & Boogers

Yesterday, Scott and I called to talk to the boys. We try and call twice a week so the boys know we are thinking about them. We have read some great articles on how much contact is appropriate when they are with their mom. We have learned (and confirmed) that it can be hard on them when you call to check on them and tell them you miss them. It is easy to make them feel guilty for having fun with one parent when the other parent isn't there too. It's hard not to see them during the week but we want what is best for them whether we like it or not.

Anyway, back to the story. When we called yesterday, the boys were working on birthday surprises for their mom. Lucas was working on a bday card when we called and he was very excited about their surprises. His Nana was watching them while his mom worked so he very proudly told us what he got her. I told him that the gift sounded perfect and that she would love it. Then I said that she would love ANYTHING that he got her....He thought about it for a minute and said..."Would she love it if I got her a booger too?" Scott and I could NOT stop laughing. Scott said probably not and I (being the goofy one) said that maybe she would like it if it was covered in gold...(he is always talking about Cash4Gold) he thought this over too and then said , "It's still going to be squishy covered in gold so she might not like that"...He just giggled and giggled! It was pretty funny. He is such a goof ball!

Lyme Disease Sucks

Lately, I have been on a Lyme Disease kick. I try and keep it at bay and not share our struggles with you because it's just not happy reading...but Lyme is persistent and I feel like it is winning. Now that I have a full time job I don't spend my days at the clinic and this means that I am out of the loop when it comes to our Lyme family. There are so many new faces; children, teens, parents, grandparents, siblings and so many loving volunteers who drive, feed and support some very sick people. It is easy for me to pretend I am not a part of this life when I pull up to the clinic to drop Scott off or pick him up...but when I go inside I am brought back to reality. It wasn't that long ago that I was driving Scott 3 hours every day and waiting alongside other caregivers for 6 hours a day. We slept in our cars in 5 degree weather, shared stories, finished puzzles, shared books, compared symptoms, offered encouragement, cried together and quickly became family. Everyone there has the same story and that can be both comforting and horrifying at the same time! The clinic is its own little world and those outside of this Lyme world seem to be apathetic to our plight. You just don't understand it unless you are living it.

Yesterday, our friend and fellow patient AS, had a seizure. She didn't have anyone staying with her this past week so she came home with us after treatment so she wouldn't be alone. Being with AS reminded me of how slow a Lyme patient needs to move and live just to get by. It was nice slowing down with her, making her dinner and just making her feel welcome. It was a good reminder of what Scott needs from me to recover. I think he needs more time to rest and I need to remember that. I try to plan activities for our family but they often conflict with what Lyme Disease has planned for that day. He can have one really great afternoon and then be bedridden the next morning. We just never know what is going to happen. I work really hard at giving the kids a normal life while they are here and have gotten really good at hiding Scott's disabilities. Most of the time they have no idea how sick Scott is. They know that sometimes daddy has to eat dinner in bed or that he needs to take a 3 hour nap but they are so gracious, loving and forgiving when we can't meet their expectations. Last weekend they ended up playing in our bedroom one afternoon because Scott was sick in bed. They just wanted to be near him for a little while.

He started a new protocol that is really making him sick. He is on IV Flagyl 3 days a week and IV Rocephin the other 4. The Rocephin is making him very sick and it happens to fall on Thur-Sun when the kids are here. We are trying to get this schedule changed so that he is not so sick when he is able to spend time with the kids. When I talk to other Lyme caregivers I realize that I am not the only one who doesn't know how to mesh Lyme Disease with every day life. It seems impossible to balance medication overload, piles of bills, depression, loss of life, disabilities, kids, family, work, house cleaning and other normal daily activities. When a loved one is dieing, hurting, suffering and fighting a chronic bacterial infection...or other illness...life seems to slow down and nothing else matters.

Now that a new year has started, so has our health insurance. I am very thankful for our health insurance but frustrated by having 2 deductibles. We have one for health coverage and one for prescriptions. We have to spend about $2000 before insurance will pay for Scott's meds. This has become a problem this month as the meds are costing $150-$300 per refill. I have had to say no to several this week already. These are not meds that you are supposed to stop cold turkey but I am not sure what else to do. We need help but I don't know where to turn. My last resort is to add a DONATE paypal button to our blog. If you have been blessed, have a few extra dollars and want to help us just click on the DONATE button. Any money that you donate will be used to pay for his prescription meds (until the deductible is met) or for his monthly insurance payment.

Here is a breakdown of his health expenses. Two a day, IV treatments cost between $700-$1000 a day. Our wonderful insurance currently pays between $500-600 a day with the remaining being our responsibility. Insurance has currently paid out $285,000 in the past 13 months and our portion is about $65,000. The clinic is billing us and we will set up a payment plan when we are done. We also have a $6,000 office visit bill because our insurance company does not cover these out of network visits. We also have supplements that we buy when we can. Right now, our out of pocket prescription meds are costing $2,000-3,000 a month. We haven't been able to fill all the prescriptions this month but are praying for a miracle to get it paid. We appreciate any donations, large or small that you can spare.
