What do you say to a child who tells you, "I don't think So-and-So knows how to be happy..."

I didn't really know what to say. That's not really something I can answer, fix or explain.
I may have cried while I tried to help them understand a few things and talked to them about responding with respect, grace and love but really, what else could I have said? I'm sorry?
